INVITATION
Welcome to BSPED 2019

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Wales and to Cardiff for the 47th meeting of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, Croeso i Caerdydd. The programme organising committee have put together an exciting agenda for this year’s meeting with a theme of: 'Working together, supporting expertise & life without barriers'

This year is the 25th meeting of the BSPED that I have attended making me now a silver card holder, and not long before I can get my free bus pass! This year the meeting will be held in the historic City Hall situated at the very heart of the capital of Wales, adjacent to the castle and the National Museum, where the conference dinner will be held. Being held close to Christmas I’ve managed to organise for the City to be ablaze with decorations and for the winter wonderland to be open just outside the conference venue for some early evening entertainment, for those who dare.

Cardiff, Wales’ Capital city, offers a startling range of unique attractions, top class entertainment and quality shopping with a difference – all within walking distance of the conference venue. It also demonstrates some innovative architecture, which sits alongside historic buildings and Cardiff Bay offers entertainment for everyone.

This year’s programme contains something for everyone, covering a wide range of topics around diabetes and endocrine disorders. I’m delighted that we have such a fantastic line up of speakers and acknowledge the hard work that goes into preparing for such meetings. The speakers have been carefully chosen in themed symposia covering up to date research, quality improvement, expert clinical practice and opinion and of course controversy! The very popular diabetes debate will return again with a great title for this year "This House believes that continuity of care with doctors underpins optimal diabetes management in children and young people with diabetes". I’m also very pleased to reintroduce a live ‘meet the expert’ session this year with Professor Mehul Dattani being quizzed by Dr Tim Cheetham over a variety of clinical scenarios. I look forward to both these sessions. We will also delve into the past with a master class on the history of Paediatric Endocrinology from Professor John Wass, which I hope you will find both educational and answer all those questions you had about the origins of endocrine disorders. This meeting will also see the inaugural presentation of the BSPED James Tanner award, for lifetime dedication in the field of diabetes and endocrinology.

I hope you will be able to join me in Cardiff this year and I look forward to greeting, entertaining, and educating you all in the capital city of Wales.

Diolch (thank you).
