11. European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health-ECTMIH 2019

Welcome to this new website for the 11th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health 2019 (ECTMIH).

The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) is delighted and proud to be hosting ECTMIH 2019 in Liverpool, UK on behalf of the Federation of European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health (FESTMIH).

ECTMIH 2017 was a huge success – we pass our thanks and congratulations to the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) and the Belgian Platform for International Health (Be-Cause Health) for an incredible Congress. It will be a hard act to follow.

Hosting ECTMIH in 2019 is a hugely exciting opportunity for RSTMH and we’re looking forward to welcoming the worldwide community of tropical medicine and global health to the UK.

Since 1907, RSTMH has worked towards improving tropical medicine and global health. Through our network of around 1,000 members across 43 countries, we facilitate research, share knowledge, guide lifelong careers and drive impact.

As you may know, every two years, ECTMIH brings together more than 1,500 scientists and experts from across the world. The Congress provides a platform for sharing research and innovation in the field of tropical medicine and global health. Contacts are made, networks are strengthened, and new partnerships are formed.

It also acts as a forum for reflection on the role of tropical medicine and global health, taking into account the biggest trends of the twenty-first century, such as human migration and climate change.

2019 has specific significance for the tropical medicine community, as it will mark the 25th anniversary of FESTMIH, of which RSTMH is a proud member. This will form a great opportunity to reflect on how much progress has been made in the last quarter of a century in terms of investigation, innovation and implementation, and is a chance to consider what we can expect from the next 25 years for tropical medicine and global health.

The challenges of these enormous fields of work continue to test us and an ever-wider network of scientists and professionals is needed to tackle the risks to human health, as well as the interactions between human and animal health, the environment, population movement, and economic, social and political change.

Never have we been so in need of the global community across all sectors and disciplines to work together. In 2019, it is more necessary than ever for the UK to demonstrate the importance, continued relevance and need for collaboration across this European Federation, and beyond, to achieve impact in the field of tropical medicine and global health.

RSTMH couldn’t organise an event as large as ECTMIH 2019 alone and we are grateful to the Strategic Committee, as well as organisations across Europe, including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and the ITM Antwerp who have already offered their support to help deliver ECTMIH 2019.

I’m delighted to announce that Dr Adrian Hopkins MBE has been appointed as the Chair of the Scientific Committee, ably supported by Joan Fahy from LSTM. Adrian’s role is to oversee the scientific content of the meeting, and we’ll hear from him shortly about his plans.
