Australian Orthopaedic Association 79. Annual Scientific Meeting

Julia and I would like to invite you to join us in Canberra for the Australian Orthopaedic Association 79th Annual Scientific Meeting, 6-10 October 2019. Canberra in late spring will still be hosting the Floriade, and there are a plethora of activities for delegates and their families to enjoy.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Teamwork and Engagement”, and there will be a wide variety of speakers, discussing not only contemporary orthopaedic practice and scientific advancement, but also ways we can work better together, both surgically, with industry, research bodies, government and the wider community.

Two of the invited speakers have wide ranging clinical experience and have demonstrated how resources can be mobilised to achieve diverse medical and community aims.

Professor Shanmuganathan Rajasekaran is the current Chair of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at the Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, and the immediate Past President of SICOT. He has built hospitals from the ground up, has over 190 publications and has been instrumental in the early development of a road safety program in India, a fascinating story and a triumph of getting disparate organisations working together.

Professor Dean Taylor is the Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University, has extensive experience with the management of athletes in the US military and also with his University sports programs, has more than 100 publications and 20 book chapters. He was an AOSSM travelling fellow in 1993 and is the co-founder and general secretary of the Magellan Orthopaedic Society, having to coordinate the activities of Orthopaedic Surgeons from the four corners of the globe.

Ian Harris is organising plenaries including one on Ethics, and Maurizio and Nicole Damiani are our local conveners, who with Alison Fallon and the fantastic AOA support staff, have organised a social program that showcases the highlights of our national capital. I thank them for their efforts and am sure that you will enjoy both the scientific and social aspects of the conference.

I have been supported in my role by the entire orthopaedic community and I hope you will join the rest of your colleagues in Canberra for what I am sure will be a great conference. There will even be a mystery presidential treasure hunt, where teamwork will be vital!
