6. International Earthquake Symposium Kocaeli 2019-IESKO

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to announce that the VI. International Earthquake Symposium (IESKO 2019) will be held from September 25 to 27, 2019, in Kocaeli, Turkey.

The East Marmara earthquakes of 17 August 1999, Kocaeli, and 12 November 1999, Düzce, are among the most important events in the history of Turkey. These double earthquakes, the second one happening while the aftershocks and the debris removal of the first one were still continuing, had created a grim situation in the region. The earthquakes, occurring in the most industrialized region of Turkey, claimed the lives of more than 18000 people, resulted in huge economical loss and negatively affected the development process of the whole country. However, these two catastrophic events had also become a turning point in the beginning of serious earthquake studies in our country. Twenty years after; we are organizing an international symposium, which will contribute to the evaluation of ongoing and planned earthquake studies in our region and in our country.

VI. INTERNATIONAL EARTHQUAKE SYMPOSIUM KOCAELİ 2019, which will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the earthquakes of 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, and 12 November 1999 Düzce, will be hosted by Kocaeli University in partnership with Düzce University, Sakarya University, Yalova University, Gebze Technical University, Bolu İzzet Baysal University, Kocaeli Government Office, Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, AFAD and MARKA. This will be the first earthquake symposium that brings together all the major institutions in the region. The VI. INTERNATIONAL EARTHQUAKE SYMPOSIUM KOCAELİ 2019, will be held at the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Convention Center at 25-27 September, 2019 with the general theme of “20 Years After”. The symposium will provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge related to earthquake, between local and global stakeholders including academicians, architects, engineers, educators, health professionals, law and social scientists, administrators, and aid agencies.

The symposium languages will be English and Turkish.
