Home to the second oldest university in Europe (founded 1290), Coimbra welcomes you to the 53rd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI) which will be held from May 22-24, 2019. This lively city in the center region of Portugal is not only recognized by its beautiful University, of which the Joanina library is among the most astounding in the world, but also for being the health capital of Portugal, having one of the largest University Hospitals in the country with 13 specialty reference centers, and the place for one of the best technology incubators in the world.

Because of its University atmosphere, Coimbra has a typical mystic environment, with a past full of relevant facts, and built on top of the memories of thousands of Portuguese and foreigners that spent years in our city, mostly studying at the University. Many left their tearful memories written in stone at the “Penedo da Saudade”. But memories go well back. From pre-historical remains to Roman ruins, Muslim and medieval structures, Coimbra has everything that a History buff requires to be happy for a long time. Coimbra was, in fact, the first capital of Portugal and even now the visitor can find the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal.

With the growth of the University in the XVI century and later in the XX century, Coimbra University now hosts close to 30.000 students from all over the world, who give the city a multi-cultural flavour. Great restaurants and hotels, as well as a very active cultural scene, makes a perfect postcard for the delegates of the 53rd Annual Meeting of ESCI.

Coimbra is the perfect scene to bridge fundamental research with clinical investigation and technology transfer, which is the main mission of ESCI. The 2019 Annual Scientific meeting will also incorporate the spirit of the Society and blend it with the cultural, educational, clinical and technological environment of the city, presenting symposia with actual and very relevant topics, which will foster networking and present to the delegates with the new developments in the respective fields.
