5. EAP Course of The European Academy of Phoniatrics

Dear Colleagues, dear Friends,

It is a great honour and pleasure for us to welcome you to the 5th EAP Course in Zagreb on November 28- December 1, 2019.

Oropharyngeal Dysphagia (OD) is a condition of difficult swallowing that is still insufficiently diagnosed and treated, and represents a significant public health problem. It is estimated that more than 30 mil. Europeans suffer from this disorder. The most vulnerable groups are people over 75 years of age, patients with neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, and patients with head and neck cancer. Proper diagnostics and treatment of this disorder are necessary in order to avoid life-threatening complications such as aspiration pneumonia, dehydration and malnutrition. However, eating is important not just for meeting the fundamental survival needs but also because of social activity related to eating in company of relatives and friends. It cannot be underestimated that bonding with family and close community during meals on a regular basis with the idea/mindset of enjoying and sharing food, is the way to promote greater physical wellbeing and to serve our emotional wellbeing. Therefore, numerous educational programs at different levels are being conducted throughout the EU today, with specialists of various specialties participating in them.

The aim of this interdisciplinary course is to raise awareness and gain knowledge about the presence of this complex health problem in our community and to give new insights about its numerous medical features, current diagnostic methods and treatment modalities.

The course will last two and a half days and will consist of didactic lectures, panel discussions, and practical sessions with ample time to interact with the course faculty. The panel discussions will deal with challenging clinical cases that will be chosen to complement the lectures and to help applying the knowledge acquired in the course to clinical practice. The attendees will have the opportunity to meet many outstanding speakers in the field of swallowing difficulties.

The aim of the course is to achieve a high scientific level and to give a lot of useful information for our daily practice.
