Dementia is estimated to affect over 23 million people in Asia Pacific, 123,000 people with dementia estimated in Malaysia (ADI Report, 2016) and this number is set to almost triple in the next 12 years.
The call for all 194 member countries with the World Health Organization (WHO) to have a “Dementia and Mental Healthcare Plan/Strategy towards 2025” was announced at the 70th World Assembly in Geneva, May 2017. ADFM had a very fruitful meeting with Ministry of Health Malaysia who have made a commitment to support ADFM in developing and producing a draft of Dementia National Plan by end of 2018. This proposed plan will be linked to MOH’s existing active ageing programme.
In Malaysia, the approximate 123,000 persons with dementia amounts to a total healthcare cost of US$175 million/year (Dementia in Asia Pacific Region, ADI Report, 2014). This healthcare expenditure does not take into account the personal experiences of persons with dementia and families who are dealing with the challenges of the disease everyday.
